What do you loose if you use the standard mail template and IMAP

Sean Cull  April 20 2009 08:52:34

I was demoing Lotus Notes to a potential client and they were really interested.

They do have some enthusiastic IMAP users so IMAP is a requirement. We tried IMAP with the standard Notes mail template and it seemed to work OK. They need the layered calendar view in the 85 template so the IMAP templates ( from R5 ) is not an option.

What issues we will get if we use the IMAP with the standard 85 template ?

They want to choose Lotus over Group wise and Microsoft because

>They really like it for its cross platform support ( MAC, Linux and Windows ),
> Because it looks similar on each client
> Because of Traveler with Nokia
> Cost

Thanks, Sean

Hi Sean, this is the right thing to do. The 8.5 mail template has everything you need for IMAP use - just make sure you enable the mail file for IMAP as per the Infocenter instructions, plus install the latest fixes to protect you again the IMAP crash problems that were in the gold release of 8.5. See { Link } for more info. Stuart

Hi Stuart, you are right, the instructions do talk about using the Mail8.NTF template.

Why is the old imapcl5.ntf template still shipped with 8.5 - is that for users that download mail from IMAP independent of a Domino server ?

Domino and IMAP have had some quite negative press. It would be good if the lifting of any previous restrictions could be publicised more.

Although I don't have much to do with IMAP normally I do keep a good eye on the yellow bubble and I struggled to get the info on this - hence the posting.

3Uwe Brahm  4.20.2009 17:08:43  Apple IMAP Mail considered harmfull for Domino Clusters

Here is a warning:

We have users with Apple Mail Clients that talk to one machine in a Domino cluster via IMAP. They use a lot of rules and the cluster server constantly replicates these databases to our other Domino cluster server members.

These IMAP client based rule/filter operations change the Domino based database somehow and this has to be updated/replicated all over to the other cluster members.

BTW: Domino folders are named mailboxes in Apple mail. Beware!

Also, not every IMAP client does IMAP the same way. Try to put an umlaut character into a folder name an see if your client can handle that.

Performance is poor compared to other IMAP-only servers. Domino is best (used) with the Notes Clients. I strongly advice new shops to use the Notes client - not an IMAP client. There is more functionality and it's best for collaboration anyway.

Just 2 cents...

Regards,

Uwe
